Whether you're looking to gain hands-on experience through an internship, share your passion for wildlife as a docent, contribute your time as a volunteer, or looking for an exciting career, there’s a place for you here. Join our dedicated team, where you'll not only grow professionally but also inspire and educate others.

All of our volunteers, docents, and interns are trained and supervised by Zoo staff. They are subject to a thorough background check. For the safety of our animals, all individuals in animal care positions must present a negative TB test and proof of COVID-19 vaccination.

Limited spaces are available. Due to the high volume of applications we receive, we are not able to give status updates on applications. Only qualified candidates will be contacted for an interview

INTERNSHIPS

Dive into a transformative internship at the Staten Island Zoo, where you'll gain real-world experience in animal care, education, and more, all while making a meaningful impact!

DOCENT PROGRAM

Become a Docent or Junior Docent at the Zoo and share your passion for wildlife conservation with visitors while gaining valuable public speaking and animal presentation skills!

VOLUNTEERS

Volunteering at the Zoo provides valuable knowledge while gaining hands-on work experience. Volunteers must be available on a regular basis. Opportunities have a minimum of 3 months and may be extended. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and placement is dependent on availability. All volunteers must be capable of working both independently and as part of a team.

Volunteer positions are available in:

  • Children's Center (Domestic Animal Care)

  • Zoofari Day Camp

  • Special Events

  • Commissary (Animal Diet Preparation) - Adult Only

  • Education & Administration - Adult Only

  • Dive Crew - Adult Only

Adult volunteers must be at least 18 years old.

Teen volunteers must be at least 14 years old.

INTERNSHIPS

The Staten Island Zoo is committed to providing an exceptional learning experience for our interns while continuing to provide a high level of care for our animals. With a close staff to intern ratio, interns are a part of the Zoo family.

Must currently be in enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program or recently graduated.

Interns are required to work 3 full days per week. College credit can be received depending on the school. Interns receive a stipend for their time.

  • Veterinary Hospital

  • Wildlife Education

  • Administration (2 Days Per Week)

    • Communications & Digital Marketing​

    • Environmental Science Communications

    • Photo Archives & Digital Asset Management

  • September 1 For Spring Internship - January Start Date

  • March 1 For Summer Internship - June Start Date

  • June 1 For Fall Internship - September Start Date

DOCENT PROGRAM

Docents and Junior Docents are dedicated individuals interested in sharing their love of conservation and animals with the public. They assist the Education Department by interpreting the Zoo’s animal habitats to visitors, and by participating in educational programs, outreach, and special events. Candidates for this position must pass a 10-week course learning about wildlife, conservation, and zoo history. They will be trained in public speaking skills and how to present ambassador animals to the public.

Docent program is available for adults over 18.

​

Junior docent program is available for teens 14 years old and older who are in high school.
